About Alonissos Northern Sporades National Marine Park

Established in 1992, the Alonissos Northern Sporades National Marine Park covers an extensive marine and terrestrial area around the island of Alonissos and surrounding islets in the Northern Sporades archipelago of Greece. It spans approximately 2,260 square kilometers, encompassing rocky shores, dense Mediterranean shrublands, underwater caves, seagrass meadows, and deep waters. The park is home to a remarkable variety of marine life, including the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, one of the rarest seal species in the world. Its waters also shelter dolphins, sea turtles, and diverse fish populations, while the surrounding forests and cliffs provide habitat for numerous bird species. The park serves both conservation and sustainable tourism purposes, with carefully regulated boating, diving, and scientific research activities to protect fragile ecosystems. Visitors to the park can explore pristine beaches, hike scenic trails on Alonissos, and witness the abundant marine wildlife either through snorkeling, diving, or boat excursions. Notable landmarks include the historic village of Patitiri on Alonissos and the archaeological site of the Old Alonissos settlement in Steni Vala. The park’s combination of terrestrial and marine environments offers a unique outdoor experience for nature lovers, delivering breathtaking views and close encounters with rare species. The park is managed by the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy in cooperation with local communities, with ongoing efforts to monitor and mitigate threats such as pollution and illegal fishing. Its status as a marine protected area highlights the importance of balancing human activity with ecosystem preservation in this ecologically sensitive region.
